Just guessing what's under that hood. Since Red Wizards are supposed to have tattooed/bald heads and all... so... one more version of Edwin Odesseiron of Baldur's Gate. Because, um... the Portrait Pack! Yeah, that's totally a legitimate excuse to paint him. I've just been working on making changes for these portraits that no one will even be able to notice in those tiny little bitmaps. ;P Expect an update soon!!

:iconorionali: contributed her wonderful design skills and created a tattoo to grace our dear Thayvian's skull (upon my insistence xD). thanks, sweetie!! <3
and some of you may recognize the chest tattoo heheh...

love the light on his collar bone'
I agree the tats are better lighter. His eyes are the focal point. darker tats would mess with that

I so love your characters and have to concur with Orionali :) the eyes are great.

Man, I want a Baldurs Gate 3 with Edwin again. I so loved it when Minsk and Edwin were bickering at each other ^^

d'aww, Edwin bickers with everyone. <3 But yeah, his banters with Minsc were pretty great! AND BG3 WOULD BE OMG AWESOME!! :faint: Maybe if EE and its sequel are successful ((and with the $4.1M success of Obsidian's Project Eternity (so far!!) it's showing the Infinity Engine is still bankable)) we might actually see it??!

NOW I'M ALL EXCITED!! I almost forgot to say 'thank you!'

I think you need to emphasis contrast and punch those tattoos.

I suppose it might come down to personal preference with the tattoos; I played around with them a bunch before deciding I liked them best lighter. ;) But really, I didn't want them to take too much attention away from the face, since as you said--it's kind of lower-contrast... so I would have to start over my whole color palette and everything (not saying that's not a good idea, just that it also means changing the other portraits in this set to match, and I'm behind schedule as it is ;D).

In fact, I really do see your point: the original BG portraits were pretty bright colors/higher-contrast, which definitely makes them stand out at a smaller size, but again--probably coming back to personal preference hehe--my approach has been more subtle. Although, if I had been thinking of it consciously at the time, I imagine I would have gone about it a bit differently... but I wasn't really trying to copy their style necessarily, and just dove right in and started painting. ^^ (Believe me, it's been hard enough to keep 40+ portraits looking consistent for this project even when I'm using my natural/instinctive style, haha.)

But I learned quite a lot from the experience, and it's definitely making me want to take more chances with color and contrast and all that!! I just had to keep these ones consistent with each other vs consistent with the existing BG portraits. So sorry if I sound defensive, lol--it's something I've thought about too much, and just gotten frustrated because of all the work I've already invested in that direction. ^^ But thank you for your comment!!

Oh hell yes :) If they ever make the movie, he so should be Edwin lol... although with all the subplots, writing baldur's gate would be hell O_O

Can I be bothered to accept that challenge? Hmmm... anyway, I worship your painting, can't wait to see more :)

oooh, yeah, you'd have to be pretty picky with the subplots; there's no way you could include half of those. But just the basic story itself + Gary Oldman the awesome cast of characters could carry a film, I'd say. SO GO FOR IT!! :D

But, you know, you'd have to give Edwin a starring role!! ;)

((Also--thank you!! ^___^))

That's a given! and well you could always put an awkward duel in, being that Minsc and Edwin both want Dyanheir for different reasons... would Edwin have to win though O_O?

I need to go back and play the game for, ahem, research purposes, I haven't played much with Edwin as a party member because I'm usually boring and a good character lol. Keep thinking about being evil though :) I'll see what I can do about writing it though, maybe you could do some artwork alongside? No pressure :P

And you're welcome hun :)

NNNNNGHHHH I have all these spoilerific ideas I want to share from my fic. xD xD xD I worked really hard to figure out plausible ways for everything to work out, so they all had believable reasons to accept an evil Red Wizard joining my PC's goody-goody party. And why he didn't just murder them all. xD But it can be done! And no way could you kill off Minsc, at least not like that. Then even people that liked Edwin might hate him. ;_;

I suppose you could just insert a PC with enough control over one or both of them to settle them down, or give them personal motivations that supersede their dislike of each other. xD Although, all the goading is on Edwin's side, remember--so if you could just figure out a reason for him to tone it back, then he'd never provoke Minsc into an outright battle. ;D

((Also helps if you connect dots between the little information we are given: I believe Edwin was sent after Dynaheir to find out what she was up to, not that he was supposed to kill her necessarily (but given his nature, he felt killing her would accomplish the task well enough. ^^ I think that's why he just joins with you if you talk to him AFTER rescuing her, to "keep an eye on her.")... at least for the purposes of my story, so that it could work out hehe. I also may have given him more Wisdom () so that he could recognize the advantages to maintaining a passably civil relationship (Lol yeah right), at least while he determines what Dynaheir's up to... and then once he figures it out, he has a New Evil Plan. xD (See, Dynaheir is already firmly integrated into my party when they run into Edwin again, so there's no way he could kill her without them all attacking him. And given the way we find Edwin in SoA, it's pretty easy to believe he is able to worm his way into groups if he has sufficient motivation.))

Can you tell I've thought about this a lot?

But yessss--research purposes, good. :D And I'm always willing (at least when I have time!) to draw Edwin BG characters hehe/gotta practice speedpainting somehow~! Good luck--hope my rambling can help with some ideas. ^___^

O_O True, if you meet the party after rescuing Dyanheir he does say he'd keep an eye on her, and Edwin can be pretty cowardly, if Minsc threatened him he'd probably back right down.

And thinking about this is good :) Damn, i'm even more tempted now lol. we'll have to do a compliation together, and you can tell me all the things I should know about Edwin... and that's one thing I love about BG, if some-one does spoil it for you, it's no biggy, you've just got a load of other stuff to make up for it. I tend to wander off and ignore the storyline a lot lol, so I've never actually made it to Baldur's Gate under my own steam... oops... :P

I can do all the random encounters and cooky humour, you can do the Edwin worship :P Rambling for the win! :)

There's info on the BG forums for portrait resolutions. Just fyi. :D

I personally have no idea about the chest tattoo, but I'll give a shot anyways... maybe something from HP, no? But I just adore the skin texture you used here - daaaaamn, it looks like a photo now. Nuuuuuu....

Also, off-topic, I have one idea for a BG/Amnesia crossover fic, where Edwin plays a role of a physician. <3 mooooh.

Yeah, Lava and I are aiming to have them all fixed up (he's been so much help, taking care of all the pesky details for me <3) and probably released by this next week--so he's been handling all the formatting/sizing/etc. I was kind of an idiot when I released the first set of portraits and never checked to see if BG:EE had officially published their new dimensions, which I suppose they already had by then. xD

Chest tattoo--yup! [link] Another of my favorite wizards. x3

And thanks! I really like my new skin-painting technique, too, hehe... :thanks: It's making me want to go back and work on every single portrait I already called "finished." This is taking me forever. xD I will try to put up a tutorial or something that will hopefully be helpful!! Even though it's always just me messing around and screwing it up until I finally get it to look right EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Edwin as a physician? That is an incredibly interesting idea... with his ego, I can't help but think he'd be a Dr. Frankenstein sort of person with ambitious creepy experiments, ackkk. xD Although Alexander's already got the Irenicus thing down, I'd say. Cool concept!! I'm looking forward to it. :D

Really? That's great! Oh did I mention that I absolutely, freaking in love with his eyes?... I just noticed it. TEACH ME UR EYE-PAINTING SECRETS.

Yup, Edwin's gonna listen to Daniel's rambling about the events of the game. xD You can already guess his facial expression.

The big secret about eyes is: don't paint them white!! Save the pure white for just one tiny spot of highlight, because even though eyes are super-reflective, a lot of what they are reflecting is the colors around them; they're usually shadowed by the eyelid so they aren't going to be super-bright. Think of them like when you're shading a sphere: the eye is round enough that it comes forward in the middle (I don't want to say 'bulges out' because that sounds gross, but basically that's what it does ;D), so the corners of it are going to be darker because they're farther back and more in shadow. So the center of the eye will be a bit brighter, since it's closer to emerging from under the shadow of the eyelid.

You could sort of highlight a bit right around the iris to make it look even more three-dimensional; I usually add a little bit of lighter color there to make it stand out a bit. But you want to save the 'white' for just a tiny dab... and make sure you're using a lot of transparencies with your brush vs full force--for your secondary highlights, they can be at an even lower transparency. I don't know how much detail I got into with his eyes here--since I knew it was going to be small I didn't bother with it so much haha... so I don't know if that helps, but this is at 100% view: [link] ...so now you can see how sloppy it really is. ^___^

lol @ imagining his facial expression. I mean, I know I say "lol" all the time, but seriously, I just laughed out loud. xD <3

I haven't played any of the BG games but this really stood out; that tiny smirk he has really gives the face a lot of character.

A great piece of art, very well done. :)

thank you very much!! personally, I find him the most interesting/entertaining of all the BG cast (which is saying something, as they are all great examples of Bioware's awesome character-creation skills ^^)
and now you have no excuse not to play the BG games, with its re-release, muahahhaa.... [link] :D

no problem!! personally, I've found I can get inspired with writing/ideas from pretty much EVERYWHERE (not that they're necessarily good ideas, though ;P), but video games seem especially helpful. Maybe because there's so many options; it lets your mind branch out, especially when you're already immersed in them... but anyway, best of luck with your writing! have fun with your adventure. :D ( and thanks ^^ )

I would meake him look a bit more tired though, you know, dark skin near the eyes, since he is a wizard and reads book all the time.
